THIS. IS. PRIMING.
Time-lapse of 4 hours prepping a board for painting.
On my Instagram account this week (@ineshermioneart) I’ve been posting a bit more about process, as people were asking me questions about it. So, I decided to create a time-lapse of a morning in the life of an painter… or well, a morning when I have to prime my boards.
Priming takes a long time but is weirdly very therapeutic: Paint Sand Polish Paint Sand Polish Paint Sand… You get the idea. Why do this so many times? Why sand? Why Polish?
Because of the style of my painting starting with a smooth surface is crucial, the smoother the surface, the more realistic I can get the painting. So, I paint on board as opposed to canvas, which takes many layers of primer to make water-tight, and ready for painting. The primer prevents the paint from sinking into the wood, helping it sit on the surface.
Once each layer is dry, enter the sander! Sanding helps smooth this out further, and thanks to the electric sander I “borrowed” from my parents’ garage, this stage is actually a lot of fun! Polishing brushes off all the dust left by the sander, leaving is clean and clear ready for another coat of paint.
