‘More Than Human’ brings together the works of artists Tansy Lee Moir and Inês-Hermione Mulford. Hosted at Custom House Gallery in Leith this thought-provoking exhibition challenges the long-held divide between humanity and the natural world, inviting audiences to reconsider their place in a deeply interconnected ecosystem.
Tansy Lee Moir’s intricate monochrome charcoal drawings are inspired by the histories of ancient trees. These trees, shaped by human intervention, wildlife, and the elements, carry silent narratives etched into their bark. Moir’s work reveals the resilience, beauty, and wisdom held within these long-living organisms, urging us to acknowledge our layered, enduring relationship with them.
Inês-Hermione Mulford shifts our attention to the unseen landscapes of the more-than-human world—her drawings depict mosses, lichens, and the textures of bark that often go unnoticed. Her work explores how cultural conditioning has distanced us from nature, highlighting the role of indigenous knowledge and folklore in fostering a renewed appreciation for all forms of life.
The term more-than-human speaks to the idea that life is far more complex than human experience alone. By exploring this concept through art, ‘More Than Human’ challenges the notion that science is the only way to understand the natural world. Instead, it offers a space for reflection and a call to action—to re-engage with nature on a deeper, more intuitive level.
Through the interplay of light, form, and texture, Moir and Mulford’s dramatic and detailed drawings encourage viewers to step beyond a human-centric perspective and embrace the beauty, intelligence, and interconnectedness of the living world.
Quotations
‘The phrase ‘Time made wood’ underpins every drawing I make. The body of the tree is in motion its entire life, mostly moving extremely slowly but sometimes very suddenly too. Every shift or alteration, large and small, contributes to the form we see today, sculpted over centuries.’
‘I tried to get into the skin of a tree with this drawing. How does it feel to move like this beech? What does that twist feel like in my own body? Would I wear my own scars with as much dignity and grace?’ Tansy Lee Moir
‘Almost everyone has been touched by sickness in their lives. Whether a friend, family member, or even ourselves, we have all felt that gut-punching-helplessness when a diagnosis is spoken out loud. Every fibre of your being wants nothing more than to fix it, to do everything you can to fight. You’d do anything if it meant saving that person. So why, when faced with the climate crisis, does it feel like many sit idle, condemning the world as we know it to die?
With a background in art, botany, and surgery, I want to challenge the dichotomy of humans vs nature. If we could see the natural world as being an extension of ourselves, would we fight harder to save it?’ Inês-Hermione Mulford
