At the Dundee Botanic Gardens on the 21st October 2023

for a collaborative day of ART and SCIENCE.

The 21st of October 2023 is National Moss Day, with the British Bryophytes Society celebrating their Centennial year. We are using this incredible milestone as an opportunity to open discussions around the surrounding environment and the importance of art in raising awareness around ecology.

 

We are running a series of talks with leading experts and pop-up exhibitions by local artists. Please see below just some of what will be on offer.

'Why Urban Mosses and their Relatives are relevant' 

Dr David Chamberlain, Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh and British Bryological Society 

Celebrating the 100th anniversary of the BBS with a discussion about Bryophytes.

'Nature-based health and wellbeing opportunities in Tayside' 

Recorded presentation by Hope Busak (RSPB) on 'Nature Recovery' projects and activities in Tayside, followed by a live presentation by Vicki Tully & Rod Mountain (University of Dundee Medical School) on 'Nature-based' health and wellbeing.

'Over the garden wall – exploring the role of an urban botanic garden'

Recorded presentation by Kevin Frediani - Curator of the Dundee Botanical Gardens,

followed by a facilitated discussion. 

'An update on Eden Project Dundee'

Caishlan Sweenie - Eden Project Community engagement project developer.

Presentation and discussion about the progress and vision of the Eden Project 

Bryophytes and Lichens Trail

This art trail has been created by Scotland-Based artist Inês-Hermione Mulford, in partnership with Dundee Botanic Gardens. The trail has two handouts, one ofr adults and an interactuve one for children. The goal of the trail is to raise awareness of these often overlooked plants within the gardens.

Location: The residency hut
Art exploring mosses and the microscopic life that inhabit these fascinating tiny plants.

 

 

Gillian Adair McFarland

Location: The Macro Micro Lab
Art that explores old and new ways of seeing and being in the world at this time of climate breakdown and biodiversity loss.

Inês-Hermione Mulford

Location: The Green Gallery
Exhibition of the original paintings created for the Bryophytes and Lichens Trail, alongside other works within Inês-Hermione's practice.

Dundee Stitch and

Textile Group

Location: Greenhouses
Textile art exploring the tactile and beautiful nature of bryophytes and lichens.
